Cosmic Current (2004)
The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television is proud to present the Canada
Award to the documentary Cosmic Currents.
The Canada Award, supported by the Multiculturalism Program of the Department
of Canadian Heritage, honours excellence in mainstream television programming
that reflects the racial and cultural diversity of Canada. It aims to promote
greater opportunities for ethnic and visible minority professionals within the
broadcasting industry on both sides of the camera.
Written and directed by Anand Ramayya and produced by Joe MacDonald for the National
Film Board of Canada, Cosmic Currents places a fresh spin on universal questions
of ethnicity, home and self. It allows the viewer a rare look into the story
of one Canadian family’s growth and change across generations and cultures.
When a life-threatening illness strikes his family, filmmaker Anand Ramayya finds
himself on a modern-day spiritual pilgrimage to India. He is joined by his traditional
Hindu mother Jaya, his psychologist/filmmaker father Ray, and his Japanese rock
star brother, Raj. From Northern Saskatchewan and Japan to Tirupati in the south
of India, what unfolds is an intimate and entertaining portrait of a family trying
to reconnect with their roots and with each other. Through the chaos and serenity
of India, Anand comes to realize the many influences – family and cultural – that
has shaped his own identity and, discovers new depths to the relationships within
his family. A vivid journey set in motion by a mother’s wish, ends by transforming
a family that had grown apart.
