Canada Award

It’s About Time (1993)

Multiculturalism and Citizenship Canada continues for the fifth consecutive year to sponsor the Canada Award, a special award created to honour excellence in television programming which best reflects the racial and cultural diversity in Canada.

This year, the Canada Award is presented to It's About Time, produced and hosted by Rita Shelton Deverell, and executive produced by Peter Flemington. The mandate of this VISION TV series is to explore sensitive, often controversial issues of the day from a diversity of perspectives not usually seen on other networks. The program examines how these issues affect our daily lives as individuals, as members of a family and a community, and as part of a large and changing society.

In its recommendation, the Canada Award jury noted that "VISION TV and It's About Time chal¬lenge token representation and successfully deal with critical issues from multicultural and multi-racial perspectives." For example, the program has dealt with such topics as Canadians caught in-between cultures, faiths and value systems, Canada after race-related rioting (a public forum), and Women and AIDS.

It is without a doubt that It's About Time meets the two fundamental objectives that underscore the Canada Award; the show fosters greater public awareness of the cultural diversity in our country, and provides, on both sides of the camera, opportunities for ethnic and visible minority professionials to excel in the broadcasting industry.
