Batiya Bak! (1990)
Multiculturalism and Citizenship Canada continues for the third consecutive year to sponsor The Multiculturalism Award, a special award created to honour excellence in television programming which reflects racial issues and cultural diversity in Canada.
This year, this unique award is presented to "BATIYA BAK!", the saga of the Batiya Bak! Turks in Canada. A video documentary, "BATIYA BAK!" deals with a recent episode in immigration policy when in 1988, the public threw its support behind a group of 2,000
Turkish nationals who were protesting the government's decision to expel them to Turkey. During these events, the media discovered Gulizar Ersoy, the lovely young Turkish girl whose excellent command of French, and personal charisma made her the focus of much attention. The expulsion of her and her family to Turkey received intensive coverage in Quebec.
The story of her eventual return to Quebec has been celebrated as an example of our openness generosity toward immigrants.
Produced, directed and shot by Werner Volkner, this poignant documentary examines immigration issues and the bias of the media's investigative efforts. This case is not a closed one, and the fate of most of the 2,000 Turks who came to this country is still undecided. Those who have not already returned to Turkey are now part of the backlog of 100,000 cases of refugee claimants in Canada still awaiting the resolution of their dilemma.
